Director of Directorate D: Communication Networks, Security & Software Applications

Dr. Joao Schwarz da Silva joined the European Commission in 1991 where he has been Head of Unit for Mobile and Satellite Communications for many years as well as Head of Unit for Networked Audio-Visual Systems, Home Platforms. Currently he is the Director for Communication Networks, Security and Software Applications in the Directorate General "Information Society".

He was instrumental in the development of Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems, UMTS, is a recipient of the UMTS Forum Chairman's award, granted for the best individual contribution towards UMTS and was involved in the development of reconfigurable radio and 4th Generation system concepts. At the ITU, which he joined in 1982, he served as Head of division responsible for the development of the HF Broadcasting Planning System. Between 1971 and 1982 he worked for the Ministry of Communications, Canada. Joao Schwarz da Silva received a PhD on the Performance Analysis of Mobile Packet Radio Systems from Carleton University, Ottawa.

Dr. Jari Veijalainen is working as a full professor in data management at University of Jyvaskyla, Finland since August 1996. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics, a M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from University of Helsinki, Finland, and a Dr.-Ing. degree in Computer Science from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. His previous positions include permanent and visiting teaching and research positions at the University of Helsinki, Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin GmbH, GMD-FOKUS, GMD-IPSI, Fraunhofer-Institut FIT (Germany), and Waseda University (Tokyo,Japan).

His research interests include advanced transaction models, workflow systems and electronic commerce systems, formal modeling, mobile computing and commerce, software engineering, and mobile multimedia data management.

He is an editor of VLDB Journal and ACM Wireless Networks and has served on numerous program committees of international conferences.

He has published tens of refereed articles in international journals, conference proceedings and scientific books.

Dr. Veijalainen is a voting member of ACM, and a member of IEEE Computer Society.
