Best Demo Award at the 13th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management 2012
A collaborative research effort between the Department of Computer Science and the KIOS Research Center at the University of Cyprus, won the Best Demo at the 13th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM'12), IEEE Computer Society, which took place in Bangalore India on July 23-26 2012.The 1st prize was awarded for the demonstration of the newly designed Airplace indoor positioning system on Android smartphones.
The demonstrated system is the result of innovative technological research to build an Android smartphone platform for real-time positioning and tracking inside buildings featuring WiFi infrastructure using Received Signal Strength (RSS) fingerprint-based. The results of this innovative research are also being exploited for the development of an enhanced prototype system via a technology transfer agreement with a large hardware and software company in Taiwan.
The award for the demo was given to the research team coordinated by PhD Candidate Christos Laoudias, at the KIOS Research Center, and comprising of undergraduate students from the Computer Science Department, George Constantinou, Marios Constantinides and Silouanos Nicolaou. This collaborative research was facilitated and led by Dr. Demetris Zeinalipour, at the Data Management Systems Laboratory (DMSL) of the Department of Computer Science and Prof. Christos Panayiotou, at the KIOS Research Center, both at the University of Cyprus.
