TONEMAP PROJECT

The TONEMAP project will increase the realism of VR system, for training simulation. In order to achieve this, real information in term of luminance and colours will be taken into account. A kind of images called High Dynamic Range (HDR) contain this information, but the current displays and projectors are not able to display the vast luminance range available in the real world, and an algorithm called Tone Mapping needs to be used in order to achieve this goal. Since the available local TM operators are not able to run in real time we propose in this project to develop a general TM platform which allows the integration of any such local algorithm to execute relatively fast, i.e. interactively.

The main objectives of the ToneMap Project are:

- Develop an application for virtual reality system for military training purposes.

- Develop algorithms for run time tonemapping of HDR images.

- Develop algorithm for run time photorealistic illumination of the scene.

- 3D modelling of the real scene (Chrysalliniotissa area) where virtual battle will take place.

- Integrate all the above in a full interactive system.
