In this Thesis Proposal I describe how I will address a problem that is becoming more and more important for users of the Grid; the problem of identifying the right resources for running a Grid application. To answer this questions we need to determine what information is required for the performance-aware resource ranking, how to obtain it, how to keep it up-to-date, and finally how to put it to use. I propose a ranking/auditing service that employs lightweight benchmarking to perform active performance monitoring of Grid resources. The service will produce information that is essential for the efficient allocation of resources with the aim of reducing the completion time of Grid applications by providing a performance-based ranking methodology. In the first part of the thesis I will present results, which demonstrate how benchmarks can contribute significantly to the intelligent performace-based auditing and ranking of resources. The second part will describe the proposed benchmarking service. It will show i) how the benchmarking service can provide active monitoring for the performance of Grid resources under a budget, and ii) how active monitoring can be used to provide effective and reliable auditing of resources.
